ARTCAST #77 - Cartoon vs Realistic Drawing

Monday, September 15th, 2014

In this episode I try and clarify some stuff I said about cartooning vs realism. I'm also trying out a new camera setup (we'll see if I like it well enough to keep it)

The new nude drawing is available on eBay - Buy The Original Art

Nice I like that tan paper so you can highlight, is that just a regular white pencil?

One note as a younger viewer, theres a crazy hi pitched hiss from your mic. Not sure what you use to edit, but a hi pass filter over the audio should work wonders. Thanks!

Also, not trying to be ageist or anything, hah. Maybe you hear it? I dunno.

Beautiful work as always Jeff, Where online can I check out some of your more cartoony stuff? Also I didn't see a link to the other artist videos you mentioned.

airheadzcustom ... Thanks Airhead!

+donhonk no worries, I use Sony Vegas to edit, Its noise removal doesn't seem to work very well. Some times I use Audacity to get rid of it, but it changes the sound of my voice so abandoned that lately. Do you have any recommendations on what program would work better, or maybe what setting?

Peter Palmiotti ... Thanks Peter

Scott Serkland ... This is his channel ... https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPuDw3g-4fnrWzxmSVPAfag ... as far as seeing some of the more cartoon stuff, its kind of randomly scattered through my website. Never really dedicated some time to gather it together. Thanks Scott

Great vid Jeff. She's gorgeous. Yeah- comics are demanding. I have trouble following through on them myself- because they require so much effort. I'm geeked that we have a lot of the same influences and things we like bud.

Defiantly, thanks Jonathan

Your paper works so well with your drawing technique. Love the shadow, and the highlights are magic.

i remember you saying the cartoon/realistic thing and (i could be wrong but) it seemed as if you were saying (or implying) that cartoon style appears to be simpler/easier to the layperson. which, to be honest, it is. if you take away the appeal factor (I've always loved don bluth and glen keane's stuff) it does look easier to do to a non artist type. i think it takes an artists eye to fully appreciate what goes on under the hood sort of speak with a cartoon style. to be able to render an arm and make it feel solid and have weight and volume with cross hatching, stipple, etc is one thing but to draw an arm with all of those attributes using only a handful of lines is quite sublime and takes it to a whole other level, imo. anyway, i love both styles of art so whatever lol
